5. Remind her why you love her, and not just as the mother of your child. Napping Your baby isn’t the only one who gets cranky when he doesn’t get enough sleep. Sleep deprivation can make what is already difficult seem impossible. Learning to nap while your baby is napping is one of the most important things you can do for yourself, your partner, and your baby. Your body needs rest to keep you sane and keep your immune system up. Don’t worry about the dust bunnies on the dining room floor. If you’re tired, set the baby in his bed and then head straight to yours; or if you prefer, lay down with your infant and let the flicker of his closing eyelids lull you to sleep.

Purge your closets of unwanted, space-wasting items. Build high shelves in bedrooms and closets to store items to which you don’t need regular access. Use decorative baskets and boxes for storage around the house. When your baby outgrows anything, pass it along to the next set of parents before it even has a chance to get cold. Take a Moment Sure you’re tired; sure you’ve got other things on your mind. But it’s a good idea to take a moment each day for you and your partner to remember what brought you here in the first place.

Lay the baby on her back and gently rub her tummy, or lay her on her tummy and gently rub her back. 6. Gently blow on the baby’s face to redirect his attention. Help me! Learn to ask for help. Recruit your friends and family. Maybe you just need another adult around for an hour, or someone to pick up a few groceries, or to bounce the baby while you pay your bills and dust the bookcase. Be specific. Whether you need a little moral support or help of a more tangible kind, chances are your friends and family will be happy to be invited into your new life, and even happier that you have offered them a way to be involved.
