For ritual purposes they burned it in stone containers or urns. They learned to perforate the sides of the containers to admit air for a draft, and, when necessary, they blew through the holes to fan the smoldering leaves. Some of the early bowls had air holes all around the lower edge. Into these holes the Indians learned to insert hollow reeds, like spokes in a hub, and blew into them. As the leaves smoldered, the smoke curled upward, and the Indians unavoidably inhaled some of it. It was a pleasant experience.

The Poncas also went to Nebraska. All three tribes eventually were resettled in Indian Territory. In 1833 some of the Oneidas were moved from New York to a reservation near Green Bay, Wisconsin. Two other eastern Indian tribes, the Munsees and the Stockbridges, also were moved to Wisconsin about the same time. Only a handful of Winnebagos still live in Wisconsin, their home. The main body of Winnebagos were moved to Iowa and then to Minnesota. After the Minnesota Uprising by the Sioux, in which the Winnebagos took no part, the Winnebagos were forced to move to the Crow Creek Reservation in South Dakota.

Most of us are scarcely aware who the Indians are. We tend to think of them as wild and savage people who were roaming the continents of the New World when the whites showed up. The significance of the presence of the many tribes escapes us. To most whites an Indian is an Indian. Much of the mischief of this misconception lies in the erroneous term "Indian" itself. The term implies homogeneity. It implies the mistaken notion that the natives encountered in the New World were one people. The Indians are not one people.
