It would take me years to obtain the state of "detached involvement" that Bruyn (1966) declares to be the ideal state for a participant-observer when dropped in the midst of an alien culture. A participant observation of a dance differs from a participant observation in a top management emergency meeting. It is necessary to emphasize, however, that I use the term participant observation literally, which does not include direct observation (Schwartzman, 1993), that is, a situation in which the researcher is present but as an observer, not as a participant.

Although this gap appeared to be obvious in comparing oral and literate cultures, it seemed to vanish as literacy increased in previously oral societies. The new problem consisted of an ideological gap , that is, the differences between western and nonwestern vocabularies , between everyday vocabularies and that of intellectual elites, and so on. This gap was filled by writers who undertook to represent the Other-to speak in the Other's voice. Lejeune judges this as just another intellectual illusion and examines interesting examples of workers who have become writers.
