He therefore over-controls, and increasingly he pushes others beyond limits so that at least some short-term goals are met. Peter will do almost anything now to block out painful reality, but the adrenalin rush that work used to give him no longer covers his anxiety. Bouts of binge drinking are becoming more frequent. He flies into a fury when Sally confronts him, and denies that he has a problem with alcohol. Peter, flipping in and out of denial, still believes he is firmly in control. Sally doesn’t see all this hyperactivity at Peter’s work.

Naively oblivious of her best interests, Sally has become a martyr-victim – the good co-dependent in a relationship with an addict. She sacrifices her true Self to maintain a semblance of harmony in the home. The more Peter abdicates his personal responsibilities at home, the more overly responsible Sally becomes. She is left fully in charge of intimacy in their relationship and, unwittingly, she carries the fears and concerns of the whole family.
