One of them asked. “In a minute. Come on in,” her mother invited. The girls came in and sat down. One was chewing gum a mile a minute. Nena gave Alex and Olivia a quarter each, just the amount of money they would need to go to the movies. “Now don’t go running all over the town after the show. You come straight home,” she warned. “We will,” Olivia promised. “And don’t let Alex out of your sight. ” “Oh, Mamá, he’s not a tramp,” Alex protested. “I don’t know why you can’t pick someone better than a beggar as a friend,” his mother scolded.

They 35 T H E S T O RY passed the bar where the fight had taken place the night before. A town drunk had the job of sweeping up the broken glass to pay off his fine, and the marshal was combing the area of the fight. Alex saw the bruises on the marshal’s face and the big patch on his forehead, and noticed that he was walking with a limp. ” Tomás asked the marshal. “All hell broke loose last night,” the marshal replied. Then he saw the barber’s wife and children. “I’m sorry for the language,” he apologized.

His complexion was ruddy and his eyes were blue with a white circle around the pupil. There was nothing outstanding about his nose, and his lips were fuller than most. Alex had never seen any man before who looked quite like this hobo. There was nothing odd about him, but he had a look all his own. Alex played cat and mouse with the hobo, trying not to look obvious as he followed him about town, keeping his distance. He watched the hobo pick up empty beer and pop bottles, tin foil, and egg cartons and put them into his sack.
