The Content of Causal Thinking The evident fact that humans ask causal attribution questions has been documented with acceptable scientific procedures. But what are the answers to these questions? What are the perceived causes of success and failure at school, in sports, for winning or losing an election, or for being accepted or rejected for a social engagement?

This contrasts with the exclusive win or loss experienced by a team in a sporting event or by a politician in an election. Expectancy was more difficult to determine. An indirect measure was derived from objective evidence related to the current performance of the company compared to its baseline performance during the previous year. Percentage change in profits was calculated, and the lowest one third of the companies were considered to be operating below expectations, whereas the highest one third in terms of percentage increments in profit were believed to be functioning above expectations.
